ESPN Helper Extension

What Is the Fantasy Goblin ESPN Helper?

The Fantasy Goblin ESPN Helper is a free Chrome browser extension that connects your ESPN fantasy account to Fantasy Goblin without requiring you to open browser DevTools or copy session cookies manually.

ESPN marks its session credentials as HttpOnly — web pages cannot read them. The extension runs inside Chrome where it can read those cookies, then sends them once to your Fantasy Goblin account using a short-lived token you control.

Supported sports: NFL, NBA, WNBA, MLB, NHL (ESPN Fantasy).

How to Install and Use the Extension

  1. Install the extension from the Chrome Web Store (search “Fantasy Goblin ESPN Helper”).
  2. Log into both services in the same Chrome profile: log into ESPN Fantasy and into Fantasy Goblin.
  3. Navigate to your ESPN fantasy league page so the extension can detect your league details (sport, league ID, season) from the URL automatically.
  4. Click the Fantasy Goblin icon in the Chrome toolbar. The popup shows a session chip (“ESPN session found ✓”) and your detected league.
  5. Click “Connect / Sync to Fantasy Goblin.” The extension securely connects your ESPN account using your existing Fantasy Goblin session — no token copying required.
  6. Done. A success message appears and an “Open Dashboard ↗” button lets you go straight to your synced league.

Troubleshooting or not on Chrome? A manual connection option is available under Account Settings → ESPN → Advanced, and a legacy token flow is in the extension’s Troubleshooting section. See below for details.

Troubleshooting the Extension

SWID or espn_s2 shows “not found”

This means the extension could not find your ESPN session cookies. Make sure you are logged into ESPN Fantasy in the same Chrome profile the extension is installed in, then click ↺ Retry Cookie Detection in the popup.

Token expired or already used

Connect tokens expire after 5 minutes and can only be used once. If you see a token error, return to Account Settings → Connect with Browser Extension and click Generate Connect Token again to get a fresh token.

Extension shows “needs reconnect” in Account Settings

ESPN periodically rotates session credentials. When this happens, your stored espn_s2 may become invalid. Generate a new Connect Token and use the extension to reconnect — the process is the same as the initial setup.

League was not detected automatically

The extension detects your league from the URL of the active browser tab. Make sure you have your ESPN fantasy league page open before clicking the extension icon. If no league is detected, your ESPN account will still connect — you can sync a league manually from Account Settings → ESPN Leagues → Add League.

CORS or connection error (developers / self-hosters)

If you are running your own Fantasy Goblin instance, ensure the FG_EXTENSION_ALLOWED_ORIGIN environment variable is set to the exact chrome-extension:// origin of the extension. See the server .env.example for details.

Extension not available on my browser

The extension is Chrome-only. Firefox and Edge support is planned for a future release. If you are not on Chrome, use the manual credential entry method described below.

How to Disconnect Your ESPN Account

You can remove your ESPN account from Fantasy Goblin at any time:

  1. Go to Account Settings → ESPN.
  2. Click Disconnect ESPN Account in the status card.
  3. Confirm the action. Your encrypted ESPN credentials are deleted from the Fantasy Goblin database. Your ESPN account itself is not affected.

To remove a specific ESPN league without disconnecting the full account, click Remove next to that league in the Connected ESPN Leagues list.

Manual Connection

Connecting ESPN Without the Extension

The browser extension is the easiest method, but it is optional. You can connect your ESPN account manually if you are not using Chrome or prefer not to install an extension.

  1. Go to Account Settings → ESPN → Advanced: connect manually (click the “Advanced” disclosure to expand it).
  2. Open ESPN Fantasy in your browser and log in.
  3. Open your browser’s DevTools (F12 or right-click → Inspect → Application → Cookies → espn.com).
  4. Copy the SWID value (with curly braces) and the espn_s2 value.
  5. Paste both into the manual form fields and click Connect ESPN Account.

Note: espn_s2 is a long string (100+ characters). Copy the full value carefully. Missing even one character will cause a connection failure.
